Free radicals are agressive molecules, which , commonly speaking, cause “rusting” of our cells. They make our skin look pallid, aged and wrinkeled. They are also the cause of swollen joints and minimize our disposition to perform appropriately .Even libido and sex may become an unrealizable desire.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules or parts of molecules in which an electron has been lost in their outer orbit. This leads to an extremely unstable condition . existing only for fractions of a second ,during which the free radicals substitute the missing electron from an ambient molecule, thereby causing enduring harm to the adjoining cell structures.

This process is called oxidation, popularly known as rusting of iron or rancidification of grease and oil. A similar flood of adverse impairments , unperceived over many years, can also lead to a permanent decline of physical power, which cannot be medically diagnosed precisely. Up to now this was considered as being a normal ageing process or some other degenerative phenomena due to ageing for which no medical or pharmacological treatment was possible.

Medication is helpful and often necessary, but usually combats only the symptoms, rarely without side effects.—The best and primary measure is prevention of permanently occurring health impairments and to change to a more health-promoting way of life combined with a corresponding diet, including antioxidants and food supplements, to fill the gaps in the diet.

During the past 40 years, the finding of facts regarding research of the ageing process, has accelerated and up to now the theory about free radicals has been consolidated by numerous studies.

The best-known are about the free radicals of oxygen, which can permanently impair our cells. —In this condition, biological antioxidants can be the most important helpers. Fresh fruit and vegetables contain vitamins and secondary plant products, which play the role of “captors of the free radicals”, which is an another expression for the word “antioxidants”. Certain polyphenols are deemed to be especially well suited for this purpose.
As observed in recent years, especially these convincing studies have not only been increasingly accepted  by biochemists, but also by physicians in the field of nutritional science, with an interest for the primary prevention of health-impairment.

Meanwhile, the fact is generally accepted, that free radical molecules may have their useful, as well as their destructive effects within the cellular metabolism, if  there is an insufficient amount of protective substances. These are commonly defined antioxidants or commonly speeking , “radical captors”.
